CabaysCabays Media (New York) –  The UN Security Council has voted unanimously to lift sanctions against Eritrea while it extends the armed embargo on Somalia.

The UN vote comes after Eritrea has restored relations with Ethiopia and other neighboring countries.

UN

The Security Council imposed an arm embargo and other tough sanctions on Eritrea in 2009 for supporting Al-Shabab hard-line militias opposed to the Somalian government and for refusing to resolve a border dispute with neighbouring Djibouti, the main host of African’s biggest US military base.

Ethiopia’s U.N. ambassador and other council members spoke immediately after Wednesday’s vote and welcomed the positive developments in the Horn of Africa.

The Djibouti government is not keen to support the UN move of lifting sanctions on Eritrea as long as the birder dispute has not yet been resolved, but the resolution adopted by the council says it will continue monitoring developments.

The resolution extending the arms embargo on Somalia is blow to Somalia’s weak government which its president has been lobbying for lifting the 25 years old arms embargo on Somalia.

But UN’s banning on trade in Somali charcoal could help to stop the deforestation in Somalia.
