Inflation hits highest in Somaliland while drought devastated livestock leaving city dwellers & nomads feel the binch

Cabays Media:- The people of Somaliland face dire situation forcing thousands to seek water and food while city dwellers also hit by the highest inflation that forced some of the biggest markets to shutdown in protest.

The shop owners at Hargeisa’s Gobonimo market decided to close down their business in protest against what they described as government failure to tackle the rising inflation. Speaking to the media some of the Gobonimo shop owners said they have closed down their shops because they do not know how to price their goods with the Somaliland currency rate diving.

The Somaliland Shilling has hit the lowest ever and US Dollar is threatening to remain in circulation and many people can not afford to buy food basics as their SL Shillings are not enough to make purchase.

The drought that also hit most of the country, specially in the eastern regions also is making the situation even worst and their are thousands of people in need of emergency assistance. The government and local humanitarian oragnizations are distributing food, water and clothes for those affected by the drought and displaced from their regions.

Meanwhile the Somaliland’s government cabinet had an emergency meeting today and they discussed how the government can tackle the diving Somaliland shilling. The minister for Somaliland’s presidential , Mohamoud Hashi held a press meeting and expressed new measures the government will take to halt the dropping Somaliland shillings.

“The electronic money transferring with US Dollar in transactions is to blame the diving Somaliland shillings and we are going to intervene that by banning the use of US Dollars in such transactions” Said Minister Hashi explaining the measures his government will take.

“We will not accept that only limited areas are used the Somaliland Shillings in transactions and we will defend the (Somaliland Shilling) by all means” Added the minister.

The minister of finance of Somaliland, Samsam Abid Aden is on tour in eastern regions to oversee and also distributing food and water has not yet comment on the current crisis causing the devalued national currency.

The drought and the rising inflation are adding the worsening situation in many parts of Somaliland and the people will need urgent assistance their number will increase dramatically.

Somaliland is largely rely on its source and taxation and doesn’t receive any direct finance assistance that can help in the drought, but the new crisis could cause a serious situation for the government,
