News update: SL Opposition parties & the Ruling one agree to end dispute over the election date
May 27, 2015 - Written by Cabays

Hargeisa, SL (Cabays Media) Source closed to presidential palace confirmed for Cabays Media that the opposition parties and the ruling Kulmiye government have finally agreed to end the dispute over the elections and will sign an agreement this evening on when elections can be held.

Some traditional leaders from the Waddani party leader’s constituencies have started pressuring Abdirahman Erro to accept the agreement he reached with the ruling and UCID parties in Tuesday’s tense meeting before his party walked out in rejecting the idea of giving the Kulmiye negotiators a time to consult with the president and the Guurti before the deal is signed.

“Chairman Erro was coming under immense pressure to accept what he already initiated but in the last minute walked out after doubting the ruling government’s seriousness in negotiating when they request for extra time for consulting with the president and the Guurti” Said a presidential officer who spoke to Cabays Media with condition of remaining anonymous.

“All night (last night) number of traditional tribal leaders were constantly contacting chairman Erro and were trying to persuade him to change his mind and to come back to the talks, and accept the deal reached yesterday” Added the officer wants to remain unidentified.

Also sources closed to the Kulmiye government confirmed that the government and its party negotiators have proposed to seal the deal this evening at president’s office and all stakeholders to come together at the presidential palace for signing the agreement, as a move affirming the all parties’s commitment to come to middle ground.

“Each side of the oppositions will have two representatives coming to the presidential to sign the agreement this evening” Said another source closed to the Kulmiye negotiators who also spoke with anonymity.

“For UCID party, the chairman Faysal Ali Warabe and their vice president candidate, Abdirashid Mattan will represent UCID and will come to the presidential in order to sign the agreement” Added the source also confirmed that Waddani party leaders will join others this evening to sign the deal confirming that elections will be held on November 15 2016 instead of the July 2017 as the Guurti controversially reached in its unpopular decision.

This could put to end the altercations among the political parties over the deputed elections delayed by the controversial decision reached by the House of Elders – the Guurti earlier this month.

Meanwhile the British ambassador to Ethiopia, Nil Wigan has arrived in the country today and held series of talks with the opposition party leaders and the chairman of Guurti, Saleban Adan. It is not clear what exactly he came for to discuss with Somaliland officials, but Somaliland’s political deadlock over the elections postponement could be one the topics he came discuss with the respective parties.
