Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh was sworn in for a fourth term in office Sunday in a extravagance ceremony attended by several regional heads of states and dignitaries.

The dignitaries attended at ceremony were included Somaliland’s president Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo.   Guelleh took the oath of office at his presidential residence in the capital, Djibouti City.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn were also among those in attendance.

Guelleh defeated three other candidates in elections held on April 8. Opposition groups had complained of curbs on freedom of assembly before the vote, while rights groups have denounced political repression and crackdowns on basic freedoms.

President Guelleh was declared the winner of last April’s elections despite of oppositions branding the election as rigged and a stage set for IOG to grip onto the power.

Djibouti, a tiny state in the Horn of Africa, is home of thousands of foreign troops, including American that has their only African’s base.

Guelleh won his last election in 2011 with vote declared 80 percent of of all votes. In order for Guelleh to win that election parliament had to change the country’s constitution because presidents were limited to two terms.

President Guelleh is the second president Djibouti had since independence in 1977. Late Hassan Guliad Abtidon, the first president was his uncle and he was basically inherited the power after Abtidon passed away.

Djibouti is part of the Greater Somali Territory know The Five Somalis and decided to remain separate after its independence from France.
