President Ahmed Mahomed Mahamud(Silanyo) was elected as the country’s fourth president and took over from Daahir Riyale Kahin on 27 July 2010. Since his presidency he embarked on more foreign trips than any other president Somaliland had.

The Saturday’s trip to Dubai via Djibouti, where he will attend the fourth inauguration of Djibouti’s president, Ismail Omar Guelleh adds to the number of times president Silanyo travel outside the country. With a large delegation he leads to Djibouti and to Dubai later, Somaliland tax payers even wonder how much the nation bears the burden as the travels aboard by the president often bears no fruits.

His frequent travels abroad, mainly to curtain countries, like UAE and others has come under criticism and the people of Somaliland are expressing opinions saying he is engaging a wasteful foreign travels which is consuming a huge amount of country’s cash.

It was estimated that president Silanyo had spent more days on foreign trips then his predecessor, which, according to his aides, is imperative. But this is stark contrast to what he used to preach as opposition leader when he used to brand the fewer trips made by his predecessor as “wasteful and unnecessary”

During his time as opposition leader, president Silanyo advocated for less travel for the presidential and more diplomatic engagement without spending ” useless travels” and he promised that he would eliminate such policies that lead Somaliland to no diplomatic breakthrough, such as frequent foreign travels Somaliland would not benefit.

Cabays Media track down the number of travels embarked by president Silanyo during his term and it reveals that he had visited Dubai more than any other city including Somaliland cities.

Pres. Siilaanyo

The whole nation seems to lost the interest of these trips as they produce no tangible  diplomatic breakthrough for the Somaliland’s case but instead they cost the nation so much.

Somalilanders are lamenting on social media that the president is not addressing some of the issues plaguing the country’s already youth migration and division going deeper since he took office.

Nepotism and corruption often shadow his travels for personal and inner circular’s gain in foreign countries, including the latest visit to Dubai which reports say the president and his closed ministers are in Dubai to sign a deal allowing the Dubai World to takeover Somaliland’s only sea port and this they can pocket a massive cash as kickbacks.

After scrutinising the frequency the president travels abroad comparing to his predecessor, Cabays Media crowns president Silanyo as Somaliland’s most travelled.
