Pro Puntland clan militias wage war in Somaliland’s Sool region for landgrab

At least 25 people were killed and dozens others were wounded in a fighting between pro Puntland clan militias in Somaliland’s Sool region Wednesday, residents confirmed.

The clan militias from Puntland vying for land grab in Sool region were reported of launching surprise attack and it is reported that more Puntland armed militias are sent to enforce the attack in the towns of Qoryale and Karimo near the Hawd areas of Sool region.

The sub clan of Omar Mohamoud of Majeerteen in Puntland are pushing for land gap from Bahararrsame sub clan of Dhulbahante in Sool region.

This is the first time the two sides engaged in deadly fighting after many years of pro Puntland militias intruding the basin areas of Hawd in Sool region.

“The situation is tense, the two sides are regrouping for a new conflict.” Said Jama Farah, a resident in the Qoryale town by phone.

Witnesses told Cabays Media reporters in Sool region that clan militia from the neighbouring town of Burtinle have joined the fighting as hundreds of residents fled from the town to nearby bushes.

Sources at the Las Anod town hospital reported that at least 20 wounded victims were brought into the hospital as fears of a larger conflict could erupt any moment.

Wednesday’s fighting, the deadliest the Sool Hawd towns have ever seen is a worrying development for the residents as elders in the town started efforts aimed at mediating the two bitter clans that fighting for two causes.

No comment could be reached from officials from Somaliland or Puntland which the two sides fighting are supported by.

Meanwhile Somaliland’s regular army are reported of been on state of emergency in case the fighting between the local militias and pro- Puntland militias spill over into other parts of the Sool region where Somaliland is predominantly controls as part of its territory that falls in pre-independence boundaries of the former Somaliland British Protectorate before joining Somalia in 1960.

Sool region is strategically positioned along trade routes in Somaliland’s eastern regions and Somalia’s Puntland state, as the region is considered Somaliland’s most important region in securing its borders with Somalia.

The regional capital of Sool, Las Anod is where the administration sits and hosts thousands of Somaliland’s arms deployed for the border protection.
