Borama -SL (Cabays) Heavily armed men loyal to tribal chief , Sultan Wabber who is wanted for declaring war against Somaliland and Somaliland police units clashed in the a remote area of Awdal region on early Sunday morning.

Reports say men armed with machine guns set up a checkpoint on the road linking Borama town to Djibouti border and started demanding cash from the road users and the locals immediately reported to the authority.

“We were stopped at gun point and told to get of out of our car by armed men introduced themselves as fighters loyal to Sultan Wabber” said one of the drivers their vehicles stopped at a makeshift checkpoint.

The armed men were confronted by the police in the region and gunfire exchanged and three men were reported injured, one policeman and two of the armed men. But there are no confirmation of exact figure of the casualties.

However, there are concerns of the increase of the insurgency of the militia loyal to the the outlawed tribal leader who vows to destabilize Somaliland. Some reports say the militia lead by Sultan Wabber is backed by the Ethiopian government and its hide outs are in the mountainous areas of Somali Ethiopian region bordering with Somaliland’s Awdal region even though the Ethiopian representative in Hargeisa rejected the claims of the Ethiopian involvement with the tribally motivated armed militia.

The latest incursion of the Sultan Wabber militia has met with heavy blow after the locals and the police were able to ward them off before they achieve their mission which was reported they wanted to collect cash from the public using the main road connecting Awdal’s capital region to the red sea by setting up the makeshift checkpoint.

The Somaliland police did not release any statement regarding the incident and no comments from the militia leader hiding in the mountains in the region.
